Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd. (HMY) is a gold producer. The Company conducts underground and surface gold mining and related activities, including exploration, processing, smelting and beneficiation. HMY operates a total of 10 underground operations, one open cast mine, and eight processing plants located in the Witwatersrand basin of South Africa, as well as the Green Stone belt. It also holds interests in the development and exploration prospects at Hidden Valley and Wafi in Papua New Guinea. As of June 30, 2009, its mining operations reported total proven and probable reserves of approximately 48.2 million ounces.

"HMY announced earlier this month the appointment of Hannes Meyer as financial director. Hannes was appointed as financial director designate August 1, 2009, and officially took over HMY's financial director's responsibilities from Frank Abbott on November 1, 2009, following his appointment to HMY's board as executive director. Hannes is a qualified chartered accountant with more than 13 years experience in the mining industry.

"On October 27, the day following the Target Mine rockfall, HMY announced that rescue workers have brought to safety the two employees trapped underground. All employees involved were accounted for at 20:00 that evening. The two rescued employees both sustained injuries and had to be admitted to the hospital. Their condition was stable. Two employees died in the rockfall, the circumstances of which were being investigated both internally and in conjunction with the Safety Inspectorate of the Department of Mineral Resources."
