WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Poland's economy grew by 0.5 percent in the third quarter compared with the previous three months, maintaining the country's position as the only major European nation to avoid recession amid the global downturn, official data showed Monday.

The growth helped the annual rate of economic expansion accelerate to 1.7 percent from 1.1 percent in the second quarter, the Central Statistical Office said.

Poland's economy has suffered less from the global economic crisis than many of its neighbors.

Experts credit the large domestic market in the country of 38 million for sustained growth, as well as the fact that Poland did not incur huge debt during the credit boom.
