The Kentucky Office of Employment and Training is working to program the latest federal extension of unemployment benefits into its system so claims may be filed and checks issued.

President Obama signed the latest emergency unemployment-compensation extension into law on Nov. 6. The law extends benefits for those who have exhausted 79 weeks of benefits already available.

The office is asking those who are getting extended benefits, as well as those who have exhausted all their benefits, to wait to apply for the latest benefit extension until they receive a letter from the office explaining when benefits will be paid and what they need to do to apply for the additional benefits.

Nearly 10,000 Kentuckians have exhausted all 79 weeks of unemployment benefits.

Kentucky’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September was 11.1 percent, compared with 9.7 percent nationally.
