Northrop to create online virus-research centerNovember 5, 2009 10:16 AM ETNorthrop Grumman Corp. has received a follow-on contract from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to create a Web-based information center for research on pathogenic viruses. The five-year contract has a top-end value of $16 million, and is a follow-on to a five-year contract awarded in 2004. Work will be performed by Northrop's Information Systems sector at Northrop's facility in Rockville, Md., and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. The Virus Pathogen Resource Bioinformatics Resource Center will aid with the research of Category A, B and C pathogenic viruses and human infection with these viruses. The "ViPR" center will include surveillance data, human clinical data, virus characteristic information, and the genomic and proteomic data. It will also include tools for analysis of pathogenic virus data, as well as a personal workbench for scientists to store data.
